Visual Journalism: Bearing Witness Behind the Green Gate

For many, the green gates of an industrial abattoir represent a physical and moral boundary, hiding the harsh reality of the meat industry from public view. At the Millstone Farm complex in Mossley, these gates have become the frontline for activists and local community members demanding transparency. This photo essay documents the raw, emotional toll on those who choose to stand vigil outside Hartshead Meats, bearing witness to what happens behind closed doors.

Intervention was prompted by reports of a red, noxious liquid discharging from the Millstone Farm site and entering local storm drains.

Key allegations include the dismemberment and decapitation of cows while still displaying signs of consciousness, and a routine failure to perform the required legal checks for death.

Under Section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006, it is an offence to cause ‘unnecessary suffering’ to any protected animal. Police failed to intervene as the sirens impacted protestors, their domestic dogs, and nearby livestock.
